Personal Kaupapa
Right from the beginning, I have always had support from my parents and therefore respect and understanding has been a big part of my life. Being respectful of the great lengths people will go to, and being grateful for the things around me. My family have never been a ‘rich’ family, but both my parents have always worked hard for what they have. My mother always made the comment along the lines of ‘I’d give you everything if I could’. I always knew they cared and would give me the world, but also made me understand that you have to work for everything too, it doesn’t just come on a plate. I’ve realised this more since moving out and having a job too, and gravely appreciate them for teaching me this. I have a lot of respect for them, and understand that in order to get what you want, you have to actively do it yourself. This comes in handy as I already have the drive to look for work and do the tasks set ahead of me. I’m excited to go out into the world after my degree as I feel confident in the fact that I know I will push to become something in the world rather than expecting that everything will just happen.

Loyalty and honesty are two of the most important traits to me too. This also comes from my parents. With honesty, my parents always used to say: ‘just tell us the truth and you won’t be in trouble’. Telling the truth and owning up to your own actions allows you to face the consequences of those actions and learn from your mistakes. Lying always adds additional problems and causes more pain to everyone involved. When you own up to your mistakes and are honest to the people around you, you gain respect and understanding that you are only human. Throughout my childhood I watched a lot of disloyalty through my schooling years with people backstabbing each other and causing the ones they ‘love’ pain. I always hated this and could never understand why people did this. Again, my parents show such loyalty to one another and showed that they truly care. However, I also pride myself in not being too eager to trust and allowing myself the time let someone gain that.

Methods
I understand that in order to reach the place I want to get in the world, I have to get there myself. I’m the one that has to take control of my own achievements and determination. One way I do this is by telling myself, `If you don’t actively do it, then it will not get done as no one else will do it for you.’ This is the mindset I have to remind myself when I have the thoughts of ‘I don’t want to’ etc. I personally think about the statement and realise that it is all for myself, no one else and the only one I’m letting down is myself. This really works for me, even though it is simple, as I have such a burning passion and determination of my craft, that I just have to remind myself of the reality behind it.

As well as this, I understand that it is incredibly important to put myself first however. Due to my determination and passion, I find it easy to not look after myself and push too hard. In order to do this, I must make sure that I eat healthily, get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, and take some down time to de-stress after a long day too. It’s very easy to get swallowed by the importance and passion of my work, and so enforcing a healthy lifestyle around it, will also aid the work I create and the way I interact with the world.

And to further this thought, a way to keep a healthy mindset I find is free writing. Making sure to let my thoughts be free and let loose, rather than keeping certain ones locked inside. I find this is especially helpful in times of stress or heightened emotion, as I get a greater understanding of myself and what I’m actually dealing with. This helps me keep a clear mind free of any obstacles and understanding of how I’m truly feeling.
Code of Practice
I will strive to be the best I can and better.
I will give understanding to all around me.
I will always endeavour to build on my craft and never stop researching.
I will allow time to myself in order to make sure I do not over work.
I will be my own person and not allow anyone to affect that.
I will never give up on my craft, and the people closest to me.
I will continue to explore more art forms.
I will always keep an open mind and be willing to try new things.
I will feel free to voice my own opinion.
I will be proud of my background and my history.
I will give everyone the opportunity to express their thoughts.
I will be selfless.
I will be honest.
I will be forgiving and understanding.
I will allow myself to be emotional and free to be expressive.
I will fight for what I believe in.
I will be forever passionate.
I will not only travel down one road, but allow myself to go wherever life takes me.
I will allow my thoughts to be free.
I will not make judgements before I truly understand a situation.
I will be me.
I will not be afraid of talking to people in times of need.
I will compete for what I want rather than holding back.
I will understand that I am the core to my own success.
I will be brave and strong in all that I do.
I will be there for those that need it.
I will find excitement in everything.
I will try to be optimistic even when it seems impossible.
I will understand that nothing is impossible.
